The Alajuela area is one of the most visited in Costa Rica due its natural atractions such as Volcanos, Rain Forest, Canopy, and much more. San Carlos is noted as the home of Arenal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The canton's principle economic activities include the production of oranges, yuca, pineapple, sugar cane, beef and dairy products. More than 50% of the total production of milk in Costa Rica comes from San Carlos. Other main Canton of Alajuela is Grecia, which lies among ridges and valleys on the southwestern slope of Poas Volcano. One area is completely separated from the remainder of the canton by the Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Range). Known as Río Cuarto, this area lies on the Caribbean Plain.
